California Private Investigator Licensing Requirements

Private detectives in California must be licensed by the Department of Consumer Affairs Bureau of Security and Investigative Services. Licensed private investigators must be 18-years or older, pass a multiple choice exam, pay a licensing fee, and submit to a criminal background check.

Private detectives in California must also have either three years (2000 hours per year) of paid investigative experience; or an AA degree in criminal law, criminal justice, or police science; and 2.5 years (5,000 hours) of investigative experience.
