Illinois Private Investigator Licensing Requirements

Private investigator licenses in Illinois are issued by the Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. An applicant must be at least 21-years old, have no felony convictions within the past 10 years, and be of good moral character.

Illinois PI licensing candidates must also meet the following criteria: have at least three years of investigative experience; or have a four year degree in police science or a related field plus one year of work-related experience; or have an associate’s degree in police sciences or a related field plus two years of investigative experience.
