Maine Private Investigator Licensing Requirements

To get a PI license in Maine an applicant must be at least 18-years-old, be a U.S. citizen or legal resident, have a high school diploma or equivalent, be of good moral character, clear a criminal background check, and pass a written examination.

All private detective licensing applicants must also meet one of the following criteria: have a minimum of 1700 hours as an investigative assistant; been employed for at least one year as a member of an investigative service in the U.S.; been employed for a minimum of one year as a law enforcement officer; have 60 academic credits; or an AA degree in law enforcement.
